ColorAlti® Technology
The purpose of ColorAlti technology (US Patent No. 10,267,630 B2) is to enable altitude awareness in peripheral vision. It is particularly useful for skydives where movement is limited, or where jumpers should be primarily focused on that which is in front of them. It is a good alternative to—or complement to—audible or numeric altimeters. We currently manufacture two devices that integrate this technology: ColorAlti 3 and DigiAlti 3.
ColorAlti 3 is a helmet mounted audio-visual altimeter conceived for maximum peripheral vision altitude awareness. There are three types of lights currently available for ColorAlti 3. The 4-LED FlexiLight 3 is a flexible gooseneck light designed primarily for open-face helmets, although some find it useful for closed-face as well, as the light stays in place when the visor is open. The 10-LED StickyLight 3—the most popular option—is an adhesive circuit board that sticks to the visor. The 10-LED RigidLight 3 is similar, but it is mounted to the visor via screws. Both of these lights have the advantage that they stay exactly in place once they are affixed.
DigiAlti 3 is a wrist-mounted digital altimeter with a 10-LED LightBar at the top. There are many advantages to this pairing of technologies. Although it may not provide the constant peripheral vision altitude awareness that is made possible by ColorAlti 3, the LightBar can be seen in peripheral vision as well, so that one can ascertain altitude without directly looking at the altimeter, or from a much further distance.
For maximum effect and for redundancy, both of these technologies can be combined, with the same settings on both ColorAlti 3 and DigiAlti 3. In effect, this gives a skydiver four external sources for the enhancement and development of altitude awareness: the numeric readout and LightBar on the DigiAlti 3, and the light and speaker on the ColorAlti 3.
